Thirteen years since its last outing, the Scary Movie franchise has officially announced its sixth instalment   and fans are already calling it a return to form. The new film marks the longโ€‘awaited comeback of the Wayans brothers, who helped create and direct the first two movies before departing the series in 2001.

The first trailer wastes no time setting the tone. Within seconds, a Meganโ€‘like AI doll is seen dancing on a train, parodying one of horrorโ€™s most viral moments of recent years. According to the Wayans brothers, this is โ€œonly the start,โ€ with the film set to lampoon everything from killer toys to modern horror trends in the franchiseโ€™s signature overโ€‘theโ€‘top style.

Marlon Wayans expressed his excitement about returning to the series, saying:

โ€œItโ€™s a movie Iโ€™m proud of. I really feel like this is something the world needs to laugh at. In every corner of our world right now, we need laughter โ€” and thatโ€™s my job.โ€

The film also brings back several beloved characters missing from the fifth instalment. Regina Hall returns as Brena, Anna Faris reprises her role as Cindi, and Marlon and Shawn Wayans step back into their iconic roles as Shorty and Rae. Their reunion marks the first time the core cast has appeared together in over two decades.

The franchise has a strong legacy to build on. The original Scary Movie (2000) was produced on a $19 million budget and went on to gross $278 million worldwide. Across all five films, the series has earned more than $900 million globally.

In a fitting coincidence, the announcement of Scary Movie 6 arrives shortly after the release of Scream 7 โ€” the very franchise the original film famously parodied. The trailer even nods to this history, echoing the iconic scene of Ghostface casually eating crisps while on the phone.

Reflecting on reuniting with his brothers, Marlon said:

โ€œIt was good to dust off the cobwebsโ€ฆ we hadnโ€™t worked together in 20 years. We all have strong opinions, but we know how to let certain people lead when itโ€™s time.โ€

He also revealed that returning to the franchise allowed him to fulfil a personal promise:

โ€œI made a promise to my father that I would regain control of the franchise, and Iโ€™m happy to finally do that.โ€

With the original creative team back, fanโ€‘favourite characters returning, and a fresh wave of modern horror to parody, Scary Movie 6 looks set to revive the franchise with the chaotic energy that made it a cultural phenomenon.
