Police Warn of Increased Pressure Ahead of Overnight Fixture

Police chiefs have voiced concerns after the government confirmed that pubs in England will be permitted to stay open until 5:00am on Monday morning for England's FIFA World Cup Round of 16 encounter against Mexico.

The overnight fixture, which kicks off at 1:00am BST, is expected to finish around 3:00am, although extra time and penalties could extend proceedings well into the early hours. The licensing extension allows venues to continue serving customers until after the match concludes.

The National Police Chiefs' Council (NPCC) said the announcement came too late, forcing police forces to reorganise staffing plans at short notice. Officers may need to work extended shifts or be reassigned from other duties to help manage the increased demand expected around pubs, bars and city centres.

Police also reminded supporters to celebrate responsibly, urging football fans to drink in moderation and respect local communities throughout the night.

Safety Concerns Remain

Police have highlighted that major international football tournaments have historically seen increases in alcohol-related incidents, including violence and domestic abuse.

With thousands expected to gather in pubs across the country, officers say additional policing will focus on ensuring supporters can enjoy the occasion safely while minimising disruption to local residents.

Authorities are encouraging fans to plan their journeys home in advance and avoid excessive drinking.

Schools and Travel Advice

England head coach Thomas Tuchel has suggested that young supporters should be allowed to stay up to watch the national team, describing the World Cup as a special occasion that only comes around every four years.

Education leaders have also suggested schools could consider a more flexible start where appropriate, while government ministers continue to encourage regular attendance.

Meanwhile, the RAC has advised supporters who plan to watch the match into the early hours not to drive unless they are fully rested and hydrated. With warm weather forecast, motorists are being reminded that alcohol and dehydration can significantly affect driving ability.

Looking Ahead

As England prepares for one of its biggest matches of the tournament, excitement is building across the country. While the extended pub hours are expected to create a lively atmosphere and provide a welcome boost for many businesses, police, employers and hospitality leaders are urging supporters to enjoy the occasion responsibly and ensure celebrations remain safe for everyone.
